Open Gov Hub Blog: January & February 2025

Here's a look back at what happened at the Hub in the first two months of 2025.

Needs, Leads & Brags: New Year, New Habits (January 8)

As we stepped into 2025, it was the perfect time to kickstart the year with fresh habits and intentional strategies. Whether in your personal life, your work, or in supporting your organization's goals, starting the year with the right mindset and tools can make all the difference. Here are some tips and tricks from the session, hosted by Hub Director Tony Rodriguez:

  • Set clear, actionable goals. Rather than setting vague resolutions, break down your goals into specific, actionable steps.

  • Focus on daily habits, not just big goals. Success is often built on small, consistent actions. Instead of just focusing on large outcomes, work on daily habits that support your larger goals.

  • Time management. Try setting aside chunks of time each day for specific tasks (e.g., mornings for focused work, afternoons for meetings). This simple shift can help you avoid distractions and be more productive.

  • Practice mindfulness and self-care. In the hustle of the new year, it's easy to forget the importance of taking care of yourself.

Muffin Monday: Bluesky (January 27)

January's Muffin Monday was centered around the social media platform Bluesky. Muffin Monday is a monthly Members-only networking event with complimentary breakfast: each month a new theme is chosen, and collaboration and continued conversation are encouraged. Here are some tips on finding people and organizations to follow and attracting followers:

  • Use a custom domain. By default, your Bluesky username takes on the domain name bsky.social. If you already own a domain name, you can use that instead to customize and verify your identity and tie it into an existing website. Go to Settings, select Account, then Handle, click "I have my own domain," and follow the steps.

  • Use starter packs to find accounts. A starter pack is a collection of accounts related to a specific profession, industry, community, or theme. Check out the Bluesky Starter Pack Directory, or view the profile of an account you like to see if they've created any.

  • Be consistent and authentic. Post regularly with content that resonates with your niche or audience. Repost interesting items and explore hashtags.

New Member Happy Hour (February 4)

We welcomed our newest Membership organization, GAIN! It was the perfect opportunity to celebrate the growth of our community and welcome our newest members with open arms. The evening was filled with laughter, engaging conversations, and delicious food, and our new members had a chance to mingle, network, and connect with fellow community members in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. A big thank you to everyone who attended!

Book Talk: The Grieving Body (February 13)

The Open Gov Hub had the privilege of hosting Mary-Frances O'Connor, Ph.D., a leading expert on grief, who has dedicated her career to understanding how loss affects not only our hearts and minds but also our bodies. The book talk offered attendees a deeper understanding of the full scope of grief and pathways to healing, both physically and emotionally.

We are incredibly grateful to Dr. O'Connor for sharing her expertise and to everyone who joined us for this important conversation on grief and its impact on our well-being.
